ACSA Associazione Cambogia Libri, Italy-Cambodia
The association “Cambogia Libri” (Books for Cambodia) was established with the specific aim of building and favouring the development of a university library at Campus 2 of the RUPP, the Royal University of Phnom Penh, entitled to Lamberto Spina, a friend from Trento, who travelled extensively on Asian routes and passed away prematurely there.
In Cambodia the association has carried on the work of ACSA (Associazione culturale studi asiatici) which, back at the beginning of the nineties, started projects of co-operation with RUPP, by sending teachers for summer internships and later on, in collaboration with scholars and professors, supported by grassroot projects of co-operation, in particular realizing a community center and revamping the production of silk manufactures in the village of Peam, in the province of Kompong Chhnang.
The agreement to set up the library was signed in May 2005 in Trento by the Rector of RUPP, Professor Lav Chhiv Eav. Works were also realized with the contribution of the Trentino Province and Municipality of Trento. The inauguration of the library took place on 29th April 2008.
Since then the Association has been gathering books and didactic material in order to increase the library books, which were quite limited in number, trained librarian staff, and has supplied more modern equipment, computers and web connection, which have been set up for students’ practice as well.
The book gathering and shipping has been realised thanks to the contribution of several Italian universities, which have offered books in English, and the Bruno Kessler Foundation, which supported the shipment. In choosing the didactic material the association also relied on the University of Chang Mai, Thailand.
Throughout the years the Association has built and developed a network of relationships in Cambodia, above all at university level, quite relevant for its involvement in the Bridging the Gap project. The diffusion of scholarship opportunities has been widely publicized via this network and has given many students the opportunity to get informed and take advantage of it. Some of them have been successfully selected and are currently studying in Trento.
The association is also still active in aid and development projects choosing those that are worth nurturing and looking for partners for its implementation.
